Tim continued as captain Bill Farren his “vice”. Unhappily ill health forced Tim to retire early in the season so that for the great majority of the games Bill Farren a vociferous, tactical and thoughtful wing forward took over.

Bill, in course of time, acquired the sobriquet of “Snips” for being so often on hand to apply the finishing touch to other player’s work, which must surely be the trade mark of a successful wing forward! Between them Tim and Bill got the 1st team away to a flying start with 10 wins in the first eleven games results were shared with Salcombe, and Launceston, promoted to first team status, effected a draw 8-8 in the one fixture at Estover. Sid Davis had been joined in the pack by a rock like 16 stone Bernard Baker and dominating in the line out and back row Bernard Maunder. The stand off position was filled, with some distinction, by a thinking, hard tackling Jack Douglas and on the wing a potential match winner in his own right the elusive hard running Cyril Mills: The overall results W21 L8 D3 291-160 gave reason for satisfaction.

The 2nd XV won 12 lost 10 drew 5 with a creditable 227 points 127, whilst towards the end of the season a few fixtures were fulfilled by an Extra “A” XV. In the Devon 7 a side competition the Club beat a Public Schools seven in extra time to succumb 3-6 to Bideford in the semi final. Sadly the season saw the death of Jack Daly Senior, associated with the club as player and committee man since the early 1930s.

The post The 1949-50 Season first appeared on PLYMOUTH ARGAUM RFC.
